  Castles in Bavaria

Bavaria is known to be the Land of the Fairytale Castles, a circumstance thanks in the first place to the famous "Fairytale King" Ludwig II. His ideal castle Neuschwanstein Castle rose to the most famous castle in the world. The "Magic Box" Linderhof Castle and the "Insular Residence" New Palace of Herrenchiemsee, also built under Ludwig II, are scarcely less well-known. The castle of his father, Hohenschwangau Castle, the Crown Prince's inspiring "Nursery", sits picturesque like the aforementioned castles at the edge of the Alps.
But the castles in Bavaria still have more superlatives to offer. Thus, the gothic Burghausen Castle with its "endless" 1,051 meters is the longest castle in Europe, even of the whole world. And the Nuremberg Castle, once one of the most important castles in the German Reich, is one of the largest and most beautiful castles in Germany. Schloss Mespelbrunn in the dark Spessart, on the other hand, is the most picturesque water castle, as a Renaissance complex "prototype" of a fairytale castle. Schloss Johannisburg in Aschaffenburg is also a Renaissance Palace, perhaps the most important German castle of this style.
Not to forget the splendid performances of the baroque period: the palaces of Schleissheim and Nymphenburg are one of the largest and most magnificent castle complexes in Europe, and the mighty Würzburg Residence of the famous architect Balthasar Neumann even got an UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
These castles and palaces and 61 more are richly illustrated and presented with the most important basic data. It is easy to get inspired, maybe even to explore these impressive monuments.
