The most beautiful Castles and Palaces in Germany |
|
|
The richness of castles and palaces in Germany is breathtaking. A comprehensive book on this subject can choose only the superlatives of the most beautiful castles. And the wealth goes even further: the superlatives are often not only alone but culminate in inter-castle phenomenons. But even of these only the most important can be listed in this short description.
The Electors and Kings of Prussia created in Berlin and Potsdam epoch-spanning from Baroque to Classicism and Romanticism a veritable palace and garden landscape. The Potsdam performances around the initiating Sansouci Palace are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and in Berlin you can enjoy the currently being reconstructed City Palace in the heart of the German capital.
Only in quantity but by no means in quality the castles of the Saxon Electors and Kings stay back, built in and around Dresden: the former Royal Palace, the "Zwinger" and the palaces of Moritzburg and Pillnitz.
Of a completely different effect is the main characteristic in North Rhine-Westphalia, which can be considered without further ado as the German state of the water castles. Of an outstanding elegance, the Baroque water castle Nordkirchen, which is not unjustly called the "Westphalian Versailles". There are also other beauties from Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque.
Again UNESCO World Heritage is the most exciting castle region of Rhineland-Palatinate: the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The charm of the landscape is completed by old towns and a real flood of castles. Talking about the castles in Rhineland-Palatinate, you should not forget the famous Eltz Castle: in its compact verticality, it became an incunabulum of European castle construction.
In Bavaria, of course, there are the castles of the "Fairytale King" Ludwig II, which enchant millions of visitors. Neuschwanstein Castle is the most famous castle in the world, Linderhof Castle the jewel box and favorite castle of the Fairytale King, Herrenchiemsee Castle as its last (partially) realized castle the island residence. Also in the spell of the Alps is Hohenschwangau Castle, the fairytale castle of Ludwig's father in the immediate vicinity of Neuschwanstein.
Baden-Württemberg also takes you through picturesque dream castles. Sigmaringen Castle on the Danube, Lichtenstein Castle and Hohenzollern Castle in the Swabian Alb are picturesque, medieval-inspired creations of the 19th century. Even more charming is the most famous castle ruin of the world, Heidelberg Castle over its old town, a picture which became an epitome of Romanticism.
Although many celebrities have been already mentioned among the castles and palaces of Germany, this list can be extended almost arbitrarily with then alone standing superlatives.
Thanks to Glücksburg Castle, Schleswig-Holstein shines with the most beautiful water castle in northern Germany. In Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, the residence of the Grand Dukes in Schwerin became a showpiece of romantic Historicism in northern Europe, often called the "Neuschwanstein of the North". In similar footsteps Marienburg Castle in Lower Saxony can be seen, serving the royal court of Hanover as an opulent summer residence.
Quite different is the outstanding contribution of Saxony-Anhalt, which helped to leverage Classicism in Germany through Wörlitz Castle and Garden. Thuringia, on the other hand, wins with one of the most well-known castles in Germany: the Wartburg. The largest mountain park in Europe, the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe in Kassel is the special fame among the many castles of Hessia.
From the actual start of the stone castle construction in the rough Romanesque over the vigorous Gothic to the ennobling Renaissance, from the lavish Baroque over the Classicism calling for sobriety to the fairytale Historicism, the castles and palaces of Germany have everything to offer, everything to offer in a breathtaking quality.
And this book presents them, the 125 most beautiful and important castles and palaces in Germany.
